Drone is a two-dimensional vertical scrolling shooter with pre-rendered 3D graphics, where players take on the role of a pilot tasked with saving Earth from an alien threat. Six nuclear missiles, known as "Drones," have been launched by an invading alien race, each escorted by swarms of enemy ships. The player's mission is to navigate through six different worlds, battling hostile forces while carefully disarming the missiles before they reach their targets. The game features two types of weaponry: rapid-fire exploding-tip missiles for general combat and specialized red stinger and blue probe missiles for strategic attacks. The stinger missiles lock onto enemy ships for large explosions, while the probe missiles are used exclusively to decrypt and disarm the Drones at the end of each level. A rechargeable shield grants temporary invulnerability, adding a layer of strategy to the fast-paced action.
Each level culminates in a boss fight requiring precise use of the stinger missiles to exploit weaknesses in enemy defenses. Successfully disarming a Drone earns points and praise, while any accidental detonation results in massive casualties and a score penalty. The player's progress is tracked via a heads-up display marking disarmed or detonated Drones. If all six Drones are neutralized, the final challenge is a showdown against the alien mothership, which must be destroyed by strategically launching stinger missiles through its rotating shield.
