Chrome Engine is a proprietary 3D game engine developed by Polish studio Techland, first introduced in the early 2000s and best known for powering large, open-ended action games with advanced terrain rendering and dynamic environments for its time. It became a key pillar of European PC game development before Techland transitioned to newer internal engines.

This foundation was later expanded in Chrome: SpecForce (2005), which emphasized squad-based combat and multiplayer support, refining the engine’s handling of large battlefields and AI behavior.

Perhaps the engine’s most famous showcase is Call of Juarez (2006), which demonstrated Chrome Engine’s strengths in atmospheric lighting, physics-based objects, and cinematic Western gunfights 🤠. The engine was later upgraded into Chrome Engine 2 for Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (2009), pushing visual fidelity, destructible environments, and storytelling further. While Techland eventually moved on to engines like Chrome Engine 6 and later C-Engine, Chrome Engine remains an important milestone in PC gaming history—especially for its role in bringing ambitious open-world design to mid-2000s hardware.
