Engine: Jade Engine

Jade Engine is a proprietary videogame engine developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, best known for powering several of Ubisoft’s most artistic and mechanically fluid PC titles of the early–mid 2000s. It was designed for flexibility across platforms while emphasizing animation quality, expressive worlds, and cinematic presentation.

In The Sands of Time, this resulted in gameplay that felt almost balletic—wall runs, pole swings, and rewinding time all flowed naturally thanks to Jade’s robust animation system.

Visually, Jade favored stylized realism over raw technical power, which helped its games age gracefully—something collectors and retro PC enthusiasts still appreciate today. Its ability to handle large interconnected spaces without constant loading screens made Beyond Good & Evil feel ahead of its time, while King Kong showcased how the engine could deliver tension and immersion through atmosphere rather than UI clutter.
